Data and AI Jobs Surge 80% as Hiring Rebounds in 2026

ISLAMABAD: Global demand for data and artificial intelligence professionals has rebounded strongly in 2026, with job postings rising more than 80% year-on-year as employers step up hiring for AI engineers and workers combining programming, database, communication and AI skills.

The data and AI jobs surge marks a sharp turnaround from the hiring slowdown seen through much of 2024 and early 2025, according to DataCamp’s The State of AI Careers 2026. The report indicates that companies are increasingly moving from cautious AI planning towards building and staffing practical AI systems.

The findings are based on an analysis of two million unique job postings across 85 regions worldwide. DataCamp examined hiring trends from January 2024 to May 2026 across 25 roles covering artificial intelligence and machine learning, data science, analytics, data engineering, infrastructure, leadership and foundational software positions.

Duplicate advertisements for the same vacancy appearing across different platforms were removed from the dataset.

AI Job Postings Jump 80% in First Quarter

The report shows that hiring weakened during 2024 and remained largely stagnant through the first half of 2025 before beginning to recover later that year.

The rebound accelerated significantly in early 2026.

Data and AI job postings stood at 540,051 in the first quarter of 2024 before falling 9.8% year-on-year to 487,069 during the same period of 2025.

By the first quarter of 2026, postings had climbed to 877,850 — an increase of 80.2% compared with a year earlier.

The acceleration suggests employers are increasing investment in teams capable of developing, deploying and supporting AI technologies.

AI Engineer Roles Lead Hiring Growth

Specialised artificial intelligence positions recorded some of the strongest increases.

AI engineer vacancies jumped 255% year-on-year, while postings for generative AI engineers increased 197%, according to the report. Both categories carried median base salaries above $100,000.

The growth indicates that demand is increasingly focused on professionals who can implement AI technologies rather than only research or evaluate them.

Hiring growth also extends beyond jobs carrying an explicit AI title.

Data engineers, Python developers, data architects and machine learning engineers ranked among the faster-growing positions as businesses expand the technical infrastructure needed to operate AI systems.

Median salaries for these infrastructure-focused roles ranged from about $95,000 for Python developers to $175,000 for machine learning engineers.

Data Analysts and Scientists Remain in Demand

Traditional analytics roles continue to account for an important part of the employment market, although their growth has been slower than specialised AI positions.

Data analysts, data scientists and business intelligence analysts recorded year-on-year growth below 50%, with median salaries ranging from approximately $70,000 to $120,000.

Leadership roles remain among the highest-paid positions in the sector.

Data science managers, data analytics managers, analytics product managers and chief data officers recorded median salaries above $120,000. Data science managers had a median salary approaching $190,000, the highest among the 25 occupations examined.

Python, SQL and Communication Skills Become Core Requirements

The analysis found a common set of skills appearing across virtually the entire data and AI employment market.

Python, SQL, communication and computer science were identified as key requirements across all 25 occupations studied. AI knowledge appeared as a core competency in 22 of the 25 roles.

The findings suggest employers are seeking professionals who combine technical expertise with the ability to communicate and apply technology in practical business environments.

These core competencies also frequently appeared among the qualifications requested in job advertisements, making them particularly relevant for candidates seeking to pass initial résumé screening.

AI Skills Linked to Higher Salaries

The report also points to a growing relationship between AI skills and employee compensation.

Citing broader labour-market research, DataCamp said a 10% increase in AI exposure was associated with a 25% higher salary. Separate research referenced in the report found workers with AI skills received a 56% wage premium in 2025, compared with 25% a year earlier.

Employers are also placing greater financial value on broader data and AI literacy, rather than limiting salary premiums to highly specialised technical positions.

DataCamp’s separate 2026 literacy research found that 74% of business leaders were willing to offer higher salaries to candidates with strong data literacy, while 69% were prepared to pay more for candidates demonstrating good AI literacy.

Most salary premiums employers were willing to offer for strong data and AI literacy ranged between 10% and 30%.

What Skills Are Needed for AI Careers?

The findings suggest that professionals seeking careers in the expanding AI economy need a combination of established technical foundations and newer artificial intelligence capabilities.

DataCamp identified programming, computer science, database management and communication as important foundations. Workers can then build on those skills with AI-related competencies such as prompt engineering, AI agent management and industry-specific applications of artificial intelligence.

With hiring recovering sharply from the stagnation seen in 2024 and early 2025, the report indicates that employment opportunities are increasingly favouring professionals who can combine conventional data and software skills with practical AI expertise.
