RIYADH, September 18, 2026: Cristiano Ronaldo’s future at Saudi club Al Nassr has come under renewed scrutiny following the team’s 4-0 defeat to Al Ain in the AFC Champions League Elite, with Saudi sports journalist Saud Al-Sarami claiming the Portuguese star could leave during the January transfer window.
The September 15 defeat was Al Nassr’s heaviest since Ronaldo joined the club. He had five attempts on goal, with one effort on target, as Al Ain secured a comprehensive victory through two goals from Houssine Rahimi and one each from Soufiane Rahimi and Georgios Giakoumakis.
The result also added to a difficult run for Al Nassr, who have recorded one victory in their last four matches across competitions, according to reports.
January Exit Claim
Al-Sarami, a former Al Nassr spokesman and Saudi sports journalist, has suggested that Ronaldo could depart the club in January. His comments were reported by Gulf News and other sports outlets following the defeat to Al Ain.
Al-Sarami attributed the possibility partly to concerns surrounding the club’s sporting and transfer activity. However, the reports do not establish that Ronaldo has decided to leave, and any potential move would ultimately depend on the player and club.
Ronaldo remains contracted to Al Nassr until June 2027, according to reporting from the Associated Press and Reuters.
Ronaldo Has Also Raised Retirement Possibility
The speculation comes after Ronaldo said last month that the 2026-27 season would probably be his final year as a professional footballer.
In an interview with Vogue, the 41-year-old forward said he wanted to leave a “spectacular legacy” and indicated that he was already planning for life after football.
