CNG stations shut across Sindh and Balochistan

CNG stations across Sindh and Balochistan have been closed after gas supply to the compressed natural gas sector was suspended during Ramadan, a move authorities say is intended to prioritise domestic consumption during the holy month.

Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) said the suspension was implemented to help ensure uninterrupted gas supply to households, particularly during peak demand hours for Sehr and Iftar, when residential consumption typically rises.

The company said gas is being provided to domestic and commercial consumers during the early morning and evening periods to facilitate people observing the fast. However, supply shortages continue at other times of the day as authorities manage limited gas availability.

In Karachi, SSGC has introduced load management measures that include suspending gas supply from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily to balance demand between domestic and commercial users.

Industry body raises concerns over fuel options

The All Pakistan Petroleum and CNG Association criticised the suspension of gas supply to the CNG sector, saying the closure of stations has created additional difficulties for consumers who rely on compressed natural gas as a lower-cost transport fuel.

The association noted that recent increases in petrol and diesel prices, including a reported Rs. 55 hike, have already increased financial pressure on motorists.

Industry representatives said the shutdown of CNG stations removes an alternative fuel option for many drivers and could lead to higher transportation costs for commuters and transport operators during Ramadan.

Officials say gas supply decisions during the holy month are aimed at maintaining stable residential supply, as household demand for cooking and other uses rises significantly.
