In a major step toward improving rural sanitation, the Clean and Transparent Khyber Pakhtunkhwa programme was officially launched in Mardan. Provincial Minister for Food Zahir Shah Toru inaugurated the initiative during a ceremony organized by the Local Government Department. The programme, introduced under the direction of Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, aims to revolutionize sanitation services across 4,200 village councils in the province.
Previously, such services were limited to urban centers. However, this Rs 9 billion initiative ensures that rural communities now receive the same level of attention. By extending sanitation infrastructure to remote areas, the Clean and Transparent Khyber Pakhtunkhwa programme addresses long-standing disparities in public service delivery.
The launch event drew participation from key stakeholders, including Additional Deputy Commissioner Eid Nawaz Sherani, Tehsil Municipal Officers, WSSC Mardan General Manager Khalil-ur-Rehman, and Chairmen of Village Councils. Assistant Director Local Government Ali Gohar briefed attendees, highlighting that 178 Village Councils in Mardan have each received a loader vehicle and a team of four sanitation workers.
Moreover, monitoring committees—comprising Assistant Commissioners, TMOs, and public representatives—will oversee the programme’s implementation. Initially, the project will operate on a one-year trial basis. Afterward, local councils will assume full responsibility for operations.
While addressing the gathering, Minister Zahir Shah Toru emphasized that the initiative aligns with Chief Minister Gandapur’s public service agenda. He noted that although urban areas had functioning sanitation systems, rural populations remained underserved. Therefore, the government has prioritized rural sanitation to uplift living standards and improve public health.
Importantly, the Minister assured that recruitment for sanitation staff was conducted on strict merit, free from political influence. He encouraged all stakeholders to contribute actively to the programme’s success and sustainability.
Additionally, Zahir Shah Toru urged sanitation teams to maintain equipment properly and perform their duties with dedication. He also appealed to the public to support the initiative by keeping their communities clean and cooperating with sanitation workers.
The Clean and Transparent Khyber Pakhtunkhwa programme has received widespread public support. Not only is it seen as a milestone in provincial governance, but it is also expected to positively impact climate resilience and environmental health.
