A woman in her 70s who had been considered dead by her family reportedly regained consciousness after being placed inside a temperature-controlled coffin in a village in China’s Hebei province.
The woman, who had been suffering from cancer, was taken home by her family after doctors told them that her condition could no longer be treated.
According to the account shared by a family member, relatives found no apparent signs of life on September 8 and placed the woman inside a coffin equipped with a cooling system. The arrangement was reportedly intended to preserve her body until relatives living outside the town could return.
Daughter-in-Law Hears Sounds From Coffin
The following evening, the woman’s daughter-in-law reportedly heard sounds coming from inside the coffin.
The family then opened it and removed the woman. According to the account, relatives who arrived at the house on September 11 found that she had regained consciousness and opened her eyes, although her condition remained critical.
The woman died the following night, on September 12, and was buried on September 13.
Questions Raised Over Incident
The story attracted questions online after a family member shared details of the incident, with some people questioning whether the account was genuine.
A village official reportedly confirmed that the incident had occurred. The official explained that the coffin was not maintained at freezing temperatures but at a temperature designed to keep the body sufficiently cool.
According to the official’s account, the woman subsequently showed signs of restored bodily activity after previously displaying no apparent signs of life.
The incident highlights the importance of establishing death through appropriate medical procedures before a body is placed in a coffin, particularly in cases involving serious illness.
