China, Pakistan to strengthen coordination on Iran as Dar visits Beijing

China said Tuesday it will deepen coordination with Pakistan on the Iran situation, as Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar visits Beijing for talks focused on regional stability and bilateral relations. The engagement comes amid rising tensions in the Middle East and ongoing diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation.

Dar, who also serves as deputy prime minister, is expected to meet China’s top diplomat Wang Yi to discuss developments linked to Iran and broader regional security concerns. Both countries have signaled interest in supporting dialogue and reducing tensions.

Diplomatic coordination on Iran

China’s foreign ministry said the two sides would strengthen strategic communication and coordination on Iran, with a focus on promoting peace. Speaking at a press briefing, spokeswoman Mao Ning described China and Pakistan as “all-weather” strategic partners working together on key international issues.

Pakistan has also indicated its willingness to facilitate dialogue, including offering to host talks between the United States and Iran.

Broader regional engagement

Dar’s visit follows recent diplomatic outreach by Islamabad, including hosting foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Turkey for discussions on the Middle East conflict. The current crisis was triggered by US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, raising concerns about wider regional instability.

One key concern is the potential disruption of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy supplies.

China’s position and mediation efforts

China, a major economic partner of Iran, has called for restraint and a ceasefire but has not indicated any military involvement. Beijing has emphasized dialogue as the primary path to de-escalation.

Separately, Chinese officials have been engaged in regional diplomacy, including mediation efforts between Pakistan and Afghanistan, reflecting Beijing’s broader role in conflict management across neighboring regions.
