The Department of English at Government Graduate College (Pinwal), Chakwal, organized an insightful program today titled “Journalism – Meaning, Practice, and Challenges.” The purpose of the event was to discuss various aspects of journalism, its theoretical background, practical challenges, and the potential difficulties faced in this field.
A distinguished panel of local journalists, including Nabeel Dhakku, Zulfiqar Mir, Ali Khan, and Abrar Janjua, participated in the event. The journalists shared their extensive experiences and insights with the audience regarding the evolving landscape of journalism. The session was moderated by the Head of the English Department, Professor Shahid Azad.
In his introductory remarks, he welcomed the journalists and mentioned that a subject titled “Journalistic Discourse” is being taught in the BS English Semester Five curriculum. He highlighted that this session was organized to provide students with a direct understanding of journalism through the experiences of working journalists.
The journalists, while presenting their personal experiences and case studies, highlighted the challenges they face in the field of journalism. These challenges ranged from dealing with political pressure and censorship to combating the threats of misinformation in the digital age.
A key topic of discussion was the “difficulties” related to journalism, particularly the struggle to maintain journalistic integrity amidst sensationalism, biased reporting, and commercial and political pressures. The session provided an in-depth discussion on these issues.
One of the most notable aspects of the event was the active participation of students, who posed thought-provoking questions to the journalists. These questions covered a range of topics, from the role of technology in journalism to practical ethical principles for aspiring young journalists.
