BYD recorded a sharp rise in European vehicle registrations in 2025, while Tesla experienced a significant year-on-year decline, highlighting diverging trajectories for the two electric vehicle makers in one of the world’s most competitive auto markets.

Data released by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) shows that BYD registered 187,657 vehicles across Europe in 2025, nearly tripling its volume from 50,912 units in 2024. Over the same period, Tesla’s registrations fell 26.9 percent to 238,656 units, down from 326,525 vehicles a year earlier. The figures cover the European Union, the European Free Trade Association, and the United Kingdom.

Although Tesla remained ahead in total registrations, BYD recorded year-on-year growth of more than 200 percent in most months of 2025. In contrast, Tesla posted declines in every month during the year, according to the ACEA dataset.

December registrations and market share

In December 2025, BYD registered 27,678 vehicles in Europe, a 229.7 percent increase compared with the same month in 2024. Its market share rose to 2.4 percent from 0.8 percent a year earlier. Tesla registered 35,280 vehicles in December, down 20.2 percent year-on-year, with its market share falling to 3.0 percent from 4.1 percent.

Global context

Globally, BYD sold 2.26 million battery electric vehicles in 2025, surpassing Tesla’s 1.64 million units for the first time, according to figures compiled by CnEVPost. BYD’s BEV sales increased by nearly 28 percent year-on-year, while Tesla’s fell by about 8.6 percent. Unlike Tesla, BYD also produces plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, expanding its presence across multiple segments.
