Zimbabwe’s veteran wicketkeeper-batter Brendan Taylor has surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the longest career in men’s ODI cricket, reaching the milestone during Zimbabwe’s match against Australia in Harare.
Taylor, 40, represented Zimbabwe in his 208th ODI in the match. Although he was dismissed for four runs, he also took a catch and extended his ODI career to 22 years and 146 days, moving beyond Tendulkar’s previous mark of 22 years and 91 days.
Taylor moves past Tendulkar’s career-length record
The milestone relates specifically to the length of an ODI career, rather than the number of matches or runs scored.
Tendulkar remains the leading run-scorer in men’s ODI cricket, with 18,426 runs, and holds the record for the most ODI appearances with 463 matches. Taylor’s latest achievement therefore adds a different record to his international career.
Before the Australia series, Taylor had scored 6,704 ODI runs in 205 innings, including 11 centuries. Those 11 ODI hundreds remain the most by a Zimbabwean batsman, according to the source report.
Taylor’s international career
Taylor’s career has included a period away from international cricket. In 2022, the International Cricket Council imposed a three-and-a-half-year ban after he was found to have breached anti-corruption regulations.
After completing the ban, Taylor returned to international cricket in 2025. His appearance against Australia subsequently extended his ODI career beyond Tendulkar’s long-standing mark.
The latest milestone adds another notable achievement to Taylor’s career while preserving Tendulkar’s separate records for ODI runs and appearances.
