Islamabad – Beaconhouse National University (BNU) has set a new benchmark in Pakistan’s higher education sector by becoming the first university in the country to receive WWF-Pakistan’s EcoSmart Campus Certification.

The recognition underscores BNU’s commitment to sustainability, climate resilience, and environmental stewardship by integrating green infrastructure and low-carbon management into its institutional framework.

The certification followed a rigorous evaluation against WWF-Pakistan’s criteria, which included energy efficiency, renewable energy adoption, biodiversity conservation, waste reduction, and environmental awareness.

In line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), BNU has implemented waste segregation and recycling systems, introduced low-carbon protocols, and embedded environmental education into its curriculum. From the upcoming academic year, the university will also adopt a plastic-free campus policy and expand initiatives to improve air quality and reduce its carbon footprint.

Officials said the certification is not just an institutional milestone but also a strategic shift for Pakistan’s academic sector, where sustainability is becoming a necessity. The achievement positions BNU as a pioneer of eco-conscious transformation in academia and a model for other universities.

BNU also announced plans to collaborate with WWF-Pakistan in creating a best-practice framework for higher education institutions across the country to help them transition towards green campuses.

University representatives said the initiative reflects BNU’s role in fostering environmental responsibility among students, faculty, and the wider community through research, innovation, and partnerships with industry and civil society.
