A blank white canvas is set to go up for auction in Germany this week, with its sale expected to fetch over $1.5 million (approximately 417 million PKR).
American painter Robert Ryman created this artwork, titled “General 52″ x 52″, in 1970. It will be auctioned on December 6 and 7 at the Grisebach Kunst Auction House in Berlin.
The piece is entirely blank, except for a deep white border painted with enamel and alkyd paints, materials typically used for painting metals.
In a statement, the auction house mentioned that while the artwork is in excellent condition, it is too delicate to be displayed before the auction.
Robert Ryman, who passed away in 2019 at the age of 88, was known for his experimental works. Despite having no formal training in art, he began painting as a hobby after working as a security guard at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Before that, he was a jazz pianist.
