Swabi: In a significant move to address the growing global health threat of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), Bacha Khan Medical Complex (BKMC-MTI), Swabi organized a one-day symposium.
Dean/CEO Prof. Dr. Shams-Ur-Rehman, Medical Director Dr. Shahid Nisar Khalid, Associate Dean Prof. Dr. Mukhtiar, Prof. Dr. Sajjad-Ur-Rehman, HoDs, faculty members, Doctors, and healthcare workers attended the seminar.
In this one-day symposium Prof. Dr. Amjad Mahboob, HoD Infectious Diseases, discussed the alarming rise of AMR, noting that Pakistan ranks third globally in AMR. He said that the high use of antibiotics without prescriptions contributes significantly to the resistance issue. He said that AMR is a global problem that must be addressed on all levels to prevent further growth. Dr. Amjad Mahboob also shared insights into the challenges, prevention strategies, and strategic objectives for combating AMR.
Medical Director BKMC Dr. Shahid Nisar Khalid emphasized the importance of prescribing quality medicines and avoiding unnecessary antibiotics to help curb resistance while Nursing Director Mehran Khan spoke about the essential role of nurses in AMR control, particularly in infection prevention and care. Similarly, Abdul Basit, Manager Pharmacy, delivered a comprehensive presentation on the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program, focusing on the vital role pharmacists play in managing AMR.
Head of Microbiology department of BKMC, Dr. Nazish Babar, along with Microbiologist Dr. Asim Ali Shah, provided essential information regarding the AMR antibiogram and discussed its importance.
Dean/CEO commended their efforts and assured continued support for future initiatives aimed at raising awareness and combating AMR in the healthcare sector.
According to the spokesperson, Antimicrobial Awareness Week is observed every year from 21st to 24th November, and this symposium is part of that awareness program. The participants found the seminar to be very fruitful and helpful in efforts to curb AMR, the spokesperson added, Spokesperson added.
