The Australian government has introduced a bill in parliament to set the minimum age for social media use at 16 years.
The proposed bill mandates the use of a national ID card for creating social media accounts. Companies violating the law could face fines of up to $32 million.
The bill has gained support from the opposition Liberal Party.
Under the proposed legislation, even parental supervision will not allow account creation for minors, and all existing accounts belonging to children will have to be deleted.
Meanwhile, Elon Musk, the owner of X, has opposed the bill.
Responding to a post by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Musk stated that the legislation is essentially an attempt to restrict Australians’ access to the internet.
