Belgium’s FIFA Triumph Turns Political as Trump Dance Goes Viral

Belgium secured a convincing 4-1 victory over the United States in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, advancing to the quarter-finals after a match overshadowed by controversy surrounding the suspension of American forward Folarin Balogun.

The result was significant not only for Belgium’s progression in the tournament but also because it followed days of debate over FIFA’s decision to lift Balogun’s red-card suspension before the knockout fixture. Belgium had formally challenged the ruling, but FIFA rejected the appeal ahead of the match.

Suspension Decision Sparks Debate

The controversy began after FIFA reinstated Balogun’s eligibility following his earlier red card. Reports claimed the decision came after intervention by US President Donald Trump, prompting criticism from several quarters.

Belgium was among those questioning the ruling and submitted an official appeal to FIFA. However, the governing body dismissed the challenge, allowing Balogun to feature in the Round of 16 encounter.

The issue also drew international attention, with the Iranian Embassy sharing a satirical social media video commenting on the decision.

Belgium Responds on the Pitch

Belgium answered the controversy with a dominant performance, defeating the United States 4-1 to secure a place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals.

Following the final whistle, Belgium’s official social media accounts posted celebration images alongside the message, “Change That,” which many interpreted as a reference to the debate surrounding Balogun’s reinstatement.

Videos circulating on social media also showed Belgian players performing what has been described as the “Trump dance” during their post-match celebrations.

Captain Says Team Used Controversy as Motivation

Speaking after the match, Belgium captain Youri Tielemans said the pre-match controversy had strengthened the squad’s determination.

According to Tielemans, the players agreed that their strongest response would come through their performance on the field rather than through public statements, and they delivered that response with a commanding victory.
