Lahore: Preparations for Basant have begun in Lahore as authorities permitted the sale of kites, spools and kite string from February 1, opening a time-bound window for regulated trading ahead of the seasonal celebrations.

Officials said 2,246 traders have been allowed to conduct sales across the city until February 8, after which a complete ban on the manufacturing and sale of kite-related items will take effect. The regulated period is intended to balance festive activity with public safety concerns.

According to official figures, 2,504 traders have applied online for registration. Of these, 163 applications remain under review while 95 have been rejected. Authorities said the registration process will remain open until February 8, with additional approvals expected in the coming days.

As sales began, residents thronged inner-city markets to purchase Basant supplies, prompting some shopkeepers to close early due to heavy crowds. Buyers, however, complained about rising prices of kite materials.

Market rates showed a single tawa gaddi selling for Rs250 to Rs300, while a one-and-a-half tawa gaddi was priced between Rs450 and Rs500. A one-piece panna was selling for around Rs4,000, with the one-and-a-half piece reaching about Rs6,000, according to traders.

Authorities have urged citizens to follow safety regulations during Basant celebrations, warning that violations could lead to enforcement action. Officials said the focus remains on preventing accidents and ensuring a safe environment during the festival period.
