DHAKA: The Bangladesh government has appointed former national captain Tamim Iqbal as president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) after dissolving the existing board over concerns related to its formation and governance.

The decision followed recommendations from a government-formed investigation committee that reviewed the BCB elections held in October last year. Authorities said the previous board was not constituted in a proper manner and faced challenges in carrying out its responsibilities.

Tamim, 37, becomes the youngest BCB president and will head an 11-member ad-hoc committee tasked with overseeing cricket administration during the transition period.

Ad-hoc committee formed

The newly formed committee includes former Bangladesh captain Minhajul Abedin and former cricketer and commentator Athar Ali Khan, along with several other members from administrative and professional backgrounds.

Officials said the move has been communicated to the International Cricket Council (ICC), with the National Sports Council expressing confidence that the decision will be recognised.

Background of the decision

The development comes amid ongoing scrutiny of the previous board, including allegations related to election irregularities, governance issues, and internal instability. Multiple board members had resigned in recent months, adding to the uncertainty.

The sports ministry had also raised concerns over the functioning of the board, including broader issues related to cricket administration in the country.

The newly appointed committee is expected to manage BCB affairs and stabilise operations while addressing governance concerns in the coming months.
