Babar Azam plays down comparisons with Virat Kohli after Zalmi win

KARACHI: Peshawar Zalmi captain Babar Azam brushed aside comparisons with India’s Virat Kohli following his team’s narrow win over Hyderabad Kingsmen in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) at the National Bank Stadium on Wednesday. Responding to questions during the post-match press conference, Babar appeared reluctant to engage in the comparison, instead focusing on his approach to match situations and team needs.

The Pakistan skipper said his priority remains adapting to conditions and building partnerships rather than drawing parallels with other players. His remarks came after Zalmi secured a last-ball victory in a low-scoring contest during the ongoing PSL season.

“You can leave that question,” Babar said when asked about comparisons with Kohli, before explaining his batting approach. He emphasized that decision-making at the crease depends on factors such as required run rate, pitch behaviour, and match scenario.

Focus on game awareness and finishing

Babar highlighted that finishing games is a process that develops over time, noting that execution can vary even on seemingly easy pitches. He said players must rely on their strengths and remain patient during difficult phases.

“Sometimes you think it is an easy pitch, but shots do not find the gaps,” he said. “In those moments, I remind myself of my strengths and game plan.”

He added that improvement in finishing ability does not happen overnight and pointed to his past performances as evidence of his experience in closing out matches.

Zalmi edge tense chase

Earlier, Hyderabad Kingsmen were bowled out for 145 in 18.2 overs after struggling against Zalmi’s spin attack. Iftikhar Ahmed and Sufiyan Muqeem controlled the middle overs, limiting the opposition’s scoring opportunities.

Kusal Perera provided resistance with 58 off 35 balls, while Marnus Labuschagne contributed 27. The rest of the batting lineup failed to build momentum, with several top-order batters dismissed cheaply.

In reply, Zalmi’s chase remained tight throughout. Babar led the scoring with 43 off 37 deliveries, supported by contributions from Kusal Mendis and Michael Bracewell. The match was decided on the final ball, with Iftikhar Ahmed and Aamer Jamal guiding the team over the line.

The result keeps Peshawar Zalmi competitive in the PSL standings as the tournament progresses.
