KARACHI: The Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi’s School of Visual & Performing Arts (SOVAPA) presented the fifth production of its Alumni Series with a staging of “Naql-e-Makani”, the acclaimed Urdu play by renowned fiction writer Rajinder Singh Bedi.
Performed at Studio II, the 60-minute production received an enthusiastic response from audiences, who praised the cast’s performances and the play’s enduring social themes. Directed by Farhan Ahsan, the production highlighted SOVAPA’s continued focus on showcasing alumni talent through classical theatre.
Classic Urdu Drama Brought to the Stage
The production featured Alaiza Javed as Azra and Adil Shakir as Nafees in the lead roles. The supporting cast included Hamza Ranjha, Sheriyar Anwar, Bharat Kumar, Hassan Malik, Aayan Aamir and Daniyal Naeem.
Farhan Ahsan directed the play, while Aayan Aamir served as assistant director.
Story Explores Social Stigma and Public Perception
Set in Delhi in 1945, Naql-e-Makani follows a middle-class family that finally secures a home after years of hardship. Their happiness is short-lived after learning that the house was previously occupied by a woman of ill repute, triggering fears about social reputation and public perception.
The arrival of an intoxicated stranger further heightens the family’s anxiety, ultimately leading them to abandon the house despite finally achieving home ownership.
Audience Applauds Performance
The play explores themes of dignity, honour, prejudice and the impact of societal judgement, illustrating how public opinion can shape personal decisions.
Audience members applauded the performances and the creative team’s interpretation of Rajinder Singh Bedi’s literary work, describing the production as another successful addition to the SOVAPA Alumni Series.
