RAWALPINDI — In a major push to enhance wheat cultivation across northern Punjab, the Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi (PMAS-AAUR), in collaboration with the Directorate of Agriculture Extension, has launched a large-scale Grow More Wheat campaign. The initiative, directed by Secretary Agriculture Punjab Mr. Iftikhar Ali Sahoo, aims to promote sustainable farming practices and increase wheat yields across six districts of the Rawalpindi Division: Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum, Chakwal, Murree, and Talagang. The campaign runs from November 7 to November 16, 2025.

Chairing a special meeting with vice chancellors of Punjab’s agricultural universities and the Director General Agriculture (Extension), Mr. Sahoo emphasized that all available resources should be utilized to make the Grow More Wheat campaign effective. He reiterated the government’s commitment to modernizing agriculture and ensuring food security through targeted outreach and farmer engagement.

Vice Chancellor PMAS-AAUR Prof. Dr. Qamar-uz-Zaman highlighted the importance of wheat as a staple crop in the Potohar region. “Our goal is to guide farmers on improved sowing techniques and best agronomic practices to achieve higher yields,” he said. The university is providing research-based knowledge, hands-on training, and technical assistance to farmers throughout the Grow More Wheat campaign.

Director Agriculture (Extension) Rawalpindi Syed Shahid Iftikhar Bukhari described the campaign as a strategic effort to strengthen the national economy. “Increasing wheat production is not just an agricultural goal — it’s a national imperative,” he said, adding that the campaign reflects a united front between government institutions and farmers.
450 Students Deployed to Support Wheat Cultivation
Dean Faculty of Agriculture Prof. Dr. Tariq Mukhtar announced that 45 field teams have been formed, comprising 450 students supervised by agricultural experts and faculty members. These teams will visit farms across the six districts to provide on-site guidance on modern wheat cultivation techniques, water management, soil fertility, and machinery use. “This campaign bridges academia and the farming community,” he said, “giving students practical experience while helping farmers adopt science-based practices.”
Campaign Aims to Build Long-Term Agricultural Resilience
Officials believe that the Grow More Wheat initiative will not only improve yields this season but also lay the foundation for long-term agricultural resilience in the region. By equipping farmers with modern tools and knowledge, the campaign is expected to reduce input waste, improve soil health, and ensure more consistent food production in the years ahead.
