ISLAMABAD: Former world boxing champion Amir Khan has said Pakistan has no shortage of boxing talent but needs stronger government support and patronage to develop the sport and produce more international-level fighters.
Speaking at a press conference, Khan said a boxing event is being organized in Pakistan on Saturday, with free entry for spectators. The event will feature Pakistani boxers of British and Danish origin, while women boxers will also compete in fights.
Khan said boxing events are being held around the world, including in neighboring India, but Pakistan also has considerable potential to develop the sport. He stressed that greater support could help talented athletes pursue professional boxing careers.
The former champion said he recently visited Lyari, where he saw significant boxing talent. Given Pakistan’s large population, he said the country has the potential to produce a large number of talented boxers if they receive proper opportunities and support.
Khan also revealed that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif had discussed the promotion of boxing in Pakistan with him during a meeting.
The former world champion said his current focus is firmly on Pakistan and that he wants to contribute to the development and promotion of boxing in the country.
