At a time when higher education institutions worldwide are redefining their role in society, Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU) is positioning itself as a hub of innovation, sustainability, and women’s leadership. In this exclusive interview, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Bushra Mirza (Pride of Performance, T.I.) shares her vision for transforming women’s higher education in Pakistan.

Q: Your institutional vision emphasizes aspiration and innovation. How is this reflected at FJWU?

Higher education today must move beyond knowledge transmission. Universities are expected to drive innovation, sustainability, and social transformation.

At FJWU, aspiration represents intellectual empowerment of women, while innovation reflects our readiness to embrace emerging technologies, interdisciplinary research, and impact-driven learning. Our academic direction aligns with global Sustainable Development Goals, ensuring that our graduates become ethical leaders and change-makers capable of addressing Pakistan’s development challenges.

Q: How is FJWU strengthening its research ecosystem?

Through the Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC), we are building a sustainable research culture based on collaboration, commercialization, and societal impact.

ORIC has facilitated extensive national and international partnerships through multiple Memoranda of Understanding with universities, industry bodies, government organizations, and international institutions, expanding opportunities for research collaboration, internships, technology transfer, and global engagement.

Institutional collaborations now extend across academia, industry, public policy institutions, and international partners, significantly strengthening FJWU’s innovation landscape.

Yes, our researchers and students are increasingly visible at national innovation forums.

  • At PINTECH 2025, seven FJWU projects were selected for exhibition, and our AI-based Speech-Enabled Machine Translation System for Pakistani Languages won a Rs. 500,000 national award, the only award secured by a women’s university.
  • Similarly, at the 10th Invention to Innovation Summit, FJWU secured 1st position in the ICT category, demonstrating strong leadership in STEM research.
  • At the Technology Impact Showcasing Event (TIS 2025) organized by HEC, FJWU presented pioneering sustainability research including the Green Plastic commercialization project, attracting interest from policymakers and industry leaders.

Q: Innovation and entrepreneurship appear to be key institutional strengths.

Absolutely. Universities must produce innovators and job creators.

Through our Business Incubation Center (BIC), we are nurturing women entrepreneurs whose startups are gaining national and international recognition.

Our startups have:

  • Secured multimillion-rupee seed funding,
  • Participated in global accelerator programs,
  • Represented Pakistan in international entrepreneurship initiatives,
  • Received sustainability awards and national innovation recognition.
  • Women entrepreneurs from FJWU are entering sectors ranging from green technologies and healthcare innovation to digital platforms and sustainable manufacturing.
