SWAT — The Afghan refugee repatriation process in Swat has progressed at a slow pace, with 57 families comprising 448 individuals returning to Afghanistan over the past two months, according to district officials.

In the last ten days alone, seven families — 45 individuals — were repatriated under the federal government’s policy and directives issued by the Ministry of Interior. Officials said the process has faced operational challenges, contributing to the gradual pace of returns.

On Tuesday, one family of 12 members from the Bunr area of Babuzai tehsil and six families totaling 33 members from the Qambar area were sent back. The district administration arranged transport and other facilities to ensure what officials described as a safe and orderly departure.

Assistant Commissioner Babozai Tariq Khan and Relief Assistant Habibullah were present during the repatriation process to supervise the arrangements, according to the administration.

Official records show that 2,202 Afghan nationals in Swat hold Proof of Registration (POR) cards, while 876 possess Afghan Citizen Cards (ACC). In addition, authorities estimate that around 225 families — approximately 2,623 individuals — continue to reside in the district, many of whom are engaged in small businesses.

The district administration stated that the repatriation process is being carried out under existing government policy and legal frameworks, with an emphasis on supervision, transparency and the provision of basic facilities.

Officials said efforts will continue in coordination with relevant departments to implement the policy while ensuring security and administrative oversight.
