Former Wales captain Aaron Ramsey has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 35, bringing an end to a career spanning nearly two decades at club and international level. The midfielder confirmed his decision in a statement on Tuesday after representing multiple top clubs across Europe.

Ramsey, who earned 86 caps for Wales and scored 21 goals, was a central figure for his national side over more than a decade. His retirement marks the conclusion of a career that included appearances in major international tournaments and leadership of the Welsh squad during a significant period of its development.

Career across Europe and return to Cardiff

Ramsey began his senior career at Cardiff City in 2006 before moving to Arsenal, where he spent the majority of his peak years. He later played for Juventus in Italy and Nice in France before returning to Cardiff City for a second spell between 2023 and 2025.

His final professional stint was with Mexican club Pumas UNAM, where his contract was terminated last year.

International career and legacy

He made his international debut for Wales in 2008 and went on to become one of the team’s most experienced players. Over the years, Ramsey played a key role in Wales’ rise on the international stage, contributing both goals and leadership.

In his retirement message, Ramsey thanked the Wales national team, supporters, and the clubs he represented, along with his family for their support throughout his career.

Wales did not qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking a challenging end to Ramsey’s international era.
