La Paz: Bolivian authorities paraded handcuffed prisoners to the media on Thursday, announcing the arrest of 17 people after a coup that sparked political chaos in a country hit by a severe economic crisis.
Rising prices, the dollar, and fuel shortages have plagued the Andean nation in recent weeks, and tensions between President Luis Arce and former strongman Evo Morales have escalated ahead of the 2025 election.
Arce, speaking for the first time since announcing the end of the coup attempt late Wednesday, denied colluding with army chief Juan Jose Zuniga, who deployed troops and tanks to the center of the capital, La Paz. Presidential Palace.
“How can one person order or plan a coup?” Arce told reporters that after Zuniga admitted he was only following orders, he hoped the pressure would increase Arce’s popularity.
