Karachi: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed that the selection committee has decided not to name the Green Shirt vice-captain.
PCB’s response came after it was revealed that pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi did not want to take up the role of vice-captain, which he was offered a day earlier.
“The vice-captain was discussed at the selection committee meeting on Friday. However, it was agreed not to appoint anyone,” he said.
“That’s why it’s not offered to anyone,” he said.
A day earlier, multiple sources said Shaheen had been approached by selectors asking if he would be interested in the role of Vice-Captain. However, if the passer shows no interest, the discussion cannot continue.
Sources close to Shaheen confirmed that the selection committee had offered the pacer for the team’s vice-captain and second-in-command to batsman Babar Azam, but he refused to accept it.
It follows the board’s proposal in March to replace Shahi as the head of the newly formed selection committee by making Babar the white-ball captain.
In Zaka Ashraf, the cricket team has appointed the fast bowler as the captain of the white ball after playing the team in the 2023 World Cup.
