Officials said more than 600 heavily armed troops were deployed to protect Route 1 Territoriale 1, the main north-south artery connecting the resort capital with the rest of the island and the outside world.

According to the office of the High Commissioner of New Caledonia, an unknown group set two fires and attacked a gas station.
But authorities say the situation is improving. “It’s a quiet night,” said the commissioner’s office.
Local media reported that the public library was a burnt building.
The mayor’s office told AFP that “there is no way to confirm it now” because “the neighborhood is not accessible”.
