Pakistan Airports to Go Fully Cashless in Landmark Digital Shift

In a major step toward modernizing the country’s aviation infrastructure, the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has unveiled a nationwide plan to eliminate cash transactions across all airports. The initiative will enable passengers, staff, and vendors to rely entirely on digital payment systems for services and purchases within airport premises.

Phased Rollout Begins with Major Hubs

The transformation will be rolled out in phases, beginning with Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore airports. These major hubs will soon feature QR code-enabled payment systems, allowing seamless transactions for everything from food and retail to service counters. The second phase will extend the system to airports in Faisalabad, Multan, and Sialkot, with full implementation planned across all regional terminals in the months ahead.

Collaboration with State Bank to Drive Digital Payments

The PAA is working in close coordination with the State Bank of Pakistan to deploy secure, traceable, and contactless payment infrastructure. Officials say the move is designed to enhance convenience for travelers, improve financial transparency, and reduce the risks associated with cash handling. All airport vendors—including shops, restaurants, and service providers—will be required to adopt the new system.

Aligning Pakistan Airports with National Fintech Vision

A spokesperson for the PAA described the initiative as part of a broader digital overhaul aimed at aligning airport operations with Pakistan’s national fintech roadmap. “This shift to cashless payments will not only streamline transactions but also help curb fraud and inefficiencies,” the official stated. “Our goal is to create a safer, faster, and more transparent experience for everyone who passes through our airports.”

The announcement comes amid growing global trends toward digitization in public infrastructure, and Pakistan airports are now positioning themselves to keep pace. By embracing cashless technology, the PAA hopes to set a new standard for operational efficiency and traveler convenience, while reinforcing the country’s commitment to digital transformation in key public sectors. As Pakistan airports evolve, this initiative marks a pivotal moment in the journey toward smarter, more connected travel experiences.
