A major political shake-up is unfolding today, with the prime minister widely expected to step down amid mounting pressure and fast-moving developments. Sources suggest a resignation may be submitted later in the day, while a scheduled press conference is likely to be cancelled.

The developments stem from Azad Jammu and Kashmir, where Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwar-ul-Haq faces a no-confidence motion led by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). The party has announced plans to formally file the motion on Tuesday, signaling its intent to take control of the regional government.

Final Round of Consultations Underway

Behind the scenes, high-level consultations have reached their final phase. Senior PML-N figures—Ahsan Iqbal, Amir Muqam, and Rana Sanaullah—are slated to meet PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari in Islamabad to finalize the transition strategy. PPP insiders claim the party has now secured the simple majority needed to form the next government.

According to political sources, PPP has gained the backing of four additional lawmakers, bringing its total support to 27 members in the AJK Legislative Assembly. With this development, a change in leadership appears imminent, with a decision expected within the next 24 to 48 hours.

Strategic Meetings and Growing Support

PPP leader Faryal Talpur, who oversees AJK affairs, has been actively engaging with key political figures including Majid Khan, Asim Butt, Akbar Ibrahim, and Faheem Rabbani. She also hosted a dinner at Sindh House attended by PPP legislators, refugee constituency representatives, and members of the Barrister Sultan group.

Sources indicate that five members from the Sultan bloc and five refugee seat lawmakers have pledged their support to PPP. Two additional members are reportedly backing the party, though their identities remain undisclosed. AJK’s Minister for Higher Education Malik Zafar Iqbal has also joined PPP, committing to support the new government formation.

Momentum Builds Toward Leadership Change

On Sunday night, Asif Ali Zardari chaired a meeting of PPP’s AJK parliamentary wing, where the decision to move forward with the no-confidence motion was formally approved. Senior PPP leader Chaudhry Yasin reminded the media that the prime minister had previously stated he would resign if 27 members opposed him. “That threshold has now been met,” Yasin said, urging Anwar-ul-Haq to honor his word.

Sardar Tanveer Ilyas echoed the sentiment, claiming the party has visual proof of its majority and asserting that the new leader of the House will be selected by Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari.

Power Show Expected Today

PPP is expected to publicly demonstrate its numerical strength in a show of force today, which could seal the prime minister’s fate within the next two days. Chaudhry Yasin added that a resignation on “Black Day” would send a meaningful signal to the Kashmiri people, marking a new chapter in the region’s political landscape.
