Rawalpindi is gearing up to introduce a fleet of electric buses aimed at easing urban travel for thousands of daily commuters. As part of the city’s push toward cleaner and more efficient public transportation, 45 electric buses are set to begin operations across four designated routes, offering Pakistan’s lowest public transport fare of Rs. 25 per ride.

PMA-Led Initiative Targets 20,000 Daily Riders

The initiative, overseen by the Punjab Masstransit Authority (PMA), is expected to serve approximately 20,000 passengers daily, marking a significant step in Rawalpindi’s transition to eco-friendly mobility. Construction of charging infrastructure is currently underway at key locations, including the Metro Station and Old Waran Depot, to support the electric fleet’s operations.

Routes Designed to Ease Congestion and Expand Access

The selected routes have been strategically mapped to connect high-traffic urban corridors. Buses will run from Saddar to 26 Number Chungi and Adiala Road, and from Raja Bazaar to Karal Chowk and Sawan Adda, providing coverage to areas underserved by existing transport systems. These routes are designed to reduce congestion and offer a reliable alternative to conventional vehicles.

Part of Punjab’s Broader Electric Bus Rollout

This rollout follows similar electric bus launches in other cities across Punjab, previously inaugurated by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif as part of the province’s broader green mobility initiative. The Rawalpindi phase is part of a larger plan to deploy 80 electric buses, with 45 arriving in the city and 15 dispatched to Gujar Khan in the initial phase.

Final Preparations Underway for Service Launch

Officials from the PMA and the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) have confirmed that final arrangements are nearly complete, and the service is expected to launch soon. The project not only aims to reduce carbon emissions but also promises modern amenities such as Wi-Fi, GPS tracking, and mobile charging ports, ensuring a comfortable and connected experience for passengers.

Electric Buses Set to Reshape Rawalpindi’s Transport Landscape

With infrastructure development in progress and operational plans in place, Rawalpindi’s electric bus service is poised to reshape the city’s public transport landscape — offering a cleaner, smarter, and more inclusive way to travel.
