In a move aimed at modernizing infrastructure and improving transparency, the Punjab Works and Communications Department has unveiled plans to digitize 38 toll plazas across 34 districts of the province.
Leadership and Planning Behind the Initiative
The initiative was discussed in detail during a high-level meeting chaired by Provincial Minister for Works and Communications, Malik Sohaib Ahmad Bharath.
Electronic Toll Collection System Introduced
During the session, department officials presented a comprehensive overview of the upcoming project, which will introduce an electronic toll collection system at designated locations.
Benefits: Transparency, Speed, and Accuracy
This digital upgrade is expected to streamline toll operations by enabling automatic vehicle identification and reducing reliance on manual processes.
Districts Targeted for Toll Plaza Digitization
Minister Malik Sohaib Ahmad Bharath highlighted that the digitization will be carried out in phases, covering toll plazas in a wide range of districts across Punjab. These include Attock, Bahawalpur, Khushab, Gujrat, Chakwal, Sargodha, Murree, Okara, Layyah, Lodhran, Multan, Muzaffargarh, Mianwali, Narowal, Hafizabad, Khanewal, Chiniot, Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Sahiwal, Vehari, and Gujranwala. Each of these locations will benefit from the new electronic toll collection system, aimed at improving traffic flow, enhancing transparency, and reducing manual inefficiencies.
A Step Toward Smarter Public Service Delivery
The minister noted that the transition to digital tolling is part of a broader strategy to enhance efficiency in public service delivery and align provincial infrastructure with modern standards.
Impact on Commuters and Governance
Once implemented, the digital toll plazas are expected to significantly improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and offer a more seamless experience for travelers across the province.
