The 2027 ODI World Cup will feature a new three-round format, with 14 teams set to compete across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
A total of 57 matches will be played in the tournament, including the semi-finals and final. The competition will progress through the Super Series, Group Stage and Super 7 before the knockout matches.
Round 1: Super Series
The opening round will involve three teams from the qualifying pathway, with three matches scheduled.
The team finishing at the top of the Super Series standings will qualify for the second round, the Group Stage.
Round 2: Group Stage
The Group Stage will feature 12 teams divided into two groups of six.
The 10 directly qualified teams will be joined by the winner of the qualifying round and the winner of the Super Series.
Each group will follow a round-robin format, with 30 matches played in total.
The top three teams from each group will qualify for the Super 7. The teams finishing fourth in both groups will also advance, creating a seven-team Super 7 field.
Round 3: Super 7
The Super 7 will be played on a full round-robin basis.
Each of the seven teams will play one match against every other team, resulting in 21 matches.
The ICC has reportedly made provisional pre-seedings for teams that could potentially reach the Super 7 stage. The provisional list includes India, Australia, Pakistan, England, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka.
However, the pre-seedings are not final and could change based on the results of the Group Stage.
The new format is expected to create a longer and more competitive tournament, with the leading teams facing each other in the Super 7 before the competition moves into the semi-finals and final.
