SWAT: Nineteen people escaped from a government-run drug rehabilitation centre in Saidu Sharif, Swat, on Friday morning after allegedly breaking the locks, raising concerns about security and supervision at the facility.
Police took action following the incident and apprehended four of the escapees before handing them over to the centre’s administration. According to sources, the management also contacted the families of those who had fled.
Around 10 people have since returned to the facility, while efforts are continuing to locate and bring back the remaining five, according to the information provided.
The rehabilitation centre operates under the provincial Social Welfare Department and accommodates around 60 people receiving treatment and rehabilitation for drug addiction. Its services include medical care, counselling and support to help patients recover and reintegrate into society.
The latest incident follows an earlier escape from the same facility several months ago. During that incident, a person receiving treatment reportedly died by suicide, while several others also fled. Most of those individuals were subsequently brought back to the centre.
The latest escape has renewed concerns about security arrangements and patient supervision at the facility.
Families of people receiving treatment have called on the provincial government and relevant authorities to strengthen security, improve monitoring and ensure appropriate care for everyone staying at the centre.
Authorities face renewed calls to address the circumstances that allowed the escape and prevent similar incidents in the future.
