Mithi: For the first time in the history of Sindh, the Tharparkar-based non-profit organization Thar Education Alliance (TEA) has initiated an enrollment drive with the local councilors of 15 wards of Mithi. The drive commenced on Thursday.
While addressing journalists, Chief Executive Officer Partab Shivani stated that the Minister of Education has announced the enrollment drive under the theme ‘Science and Sindh,’ with the goal of increasing school enrollment to 6 million students. This initiative aims to retain out-of-school children by integrating them into the education system.
Shivani added, “If a councilor can conduct door-to-door campaigns for election votes, they can similarly put in the effort for education. Councilors can pledge their commitment to education by enrolling the children of their wards in school.”
He emphasized that stakeholders in the community, including local authorities and parliamentarians, should take responsibility for adopting schools within his constituency. This sense of ownership will enhance the value of education and the Ministry of Education will support it.
The 14-day drive began in Jagdish Colony and concluded in Gujratai Mohalla on its first day. The community, teachers from various schools, and other stakeholders participated in the drive.
Councilor Khatau Mukhi of Ward No. 11 in Mithi went door-to-door, appealing to parents to enroll their children in school. He emphasized that those who could not receive admission at an early age should attend non-formal education centers. This approach, he argued, would help retain children in the educational system.
Pakistan has one of the world’s highest out-of-school children populations, with 26.2 million children not attending school. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif declared an “education emergency” across Pakistan. Similarly, the Minister of Education in Sindh aims to increase enrollment to six million students.
