National Workshop to Develop a Climate Rationale for the WASH Sector in Pakistan
Islamabad: Pakistan ranks among the top 10 countries worldwide most affected by climate change and natural disasters. Enhancing the resilience of the WASH sector is crucial for achieving SDG 6. Since September 2024, UNICEF and the Ministry of Climate Change, with support from SIWI, have led efforts to promote climate-resilient WASH services to enhance their sustainability and safety. A technical working group was formed in October, and a comprehensive climate risk analysis and WASH policy review were completed. These documents provide the evidence base for the workshop.
The proposed workshop, with over 60 participants, includes representatives from MOCC, Ministry of Planning, basin authorities and UNICEF the World Bank. The workshops brings together the expertise and knowledge from the provinces to support the process.
During the workshop we will be mapping key climate risk per province, identifying solutions to these risks at the Local and Enabling Environment level. The workshop will focus on floods, drought, extreme heat, landslides, sea level rise and cyclones.
The aim at the end of the workshop is to design a consensual, multi-stakeholder Action Plan to improved, sustainable and climate resilient WASH. This is to lay the foundations of the climate rationale for the WASH sector in Pakistan.
Refining the Action Plans, Taking the actions plans back to the provinces for their review and finalization. To share with a broader audience and ensure we capture the key issues.
