SWAT: A 4.6 magnitude Swat earthquake today jolted the valley and nearby districts on Wednesday, creating panic among residents. The tremors forced people out of their homes and shops, with many reciting Kalima Tayyaba as they gathered in open spaces.
The Seismological Center confirmed the earthquake struck at a depth of 152 kilometers. Its epicenter lay in the Hindu Kush mountain range, a seismically active zone known for frequent tremors affecting northern Pakistan and Afghanistan. Because of the depth, shocks were felt across Swat, Shangla, Buner, Malakand, and adjoining districts.
Local residents reported rattling doors, shaking windows, and moving furniture during the tremors. Shopkeepers closed shutters and rushed outside, while families quickly left their houses. Schools and offices also experienced panic as people evacuated buildings.
Authorities, however, assured the public that no casualties or property damage occurred. The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) monitored the situation and urged people to stay calm. Officials also reminded citizens to follow safety measures such as avoiding damaged structures, remaining in open areas, and preparing emergency supplies.
Swat lies in an earthquake-prone zone due to its proximity to the Hindu Kush fault lines. In past years, similar tremors have shaken the valley, reminding residents of the devastating 2005 earthquake in northern Pakistan.
Experts stress earthquake preparedness for mountainous regions like Swat. They emphasize the need for earthquake-resistant construction, safety drills, and awareness campaigns to minimize risks.
Although no loss of life or property occurred, the Swat earthquake today highlighted the valley’s vulnerability and the need for constant vigilance.
