Once there lived an Arabic tribe in a village which was known for lying and giving false testimony.
A man and a woman from the said village tied the knot secretly. The marriage was according to Sharia law as it took place in the presence of the judge and witnesses. However, the villagers were not aware of the said wedding.
Differences emerged between the couple after some time and the husband expelled out of house, depriving her of all her Sharia rights.
The lady took the case to the judge of the city and told him that her husband had forced her to leave the house and was not ready to provide Sharia rights to her.
Hearing the complaint of the woman, the judge said:
“No one is aware about your marriage as it took place secretly.”
The woman said that our marriage was completely according to Sharia law.
The judge asked the lady: “Have you any witnesses of the wedding?”
The woman informed: “Yes….Qazi Sahib…I have two witnesses and the marriage took place in their presence.”
The judge Sahib summoned the husband and the witnesses. But they flatly refused to recognize the woman and the marriage in the full court.
The husband and witnesses said in a single voice that they had never even seen this woman before today.
The judge, looking at the woman, her husband and the witnesses at the same time, asked the woman:
“Does your husband have dogs?”
The woman replied: “Yes”
The judge questioned the woman:
“Will you accept the testimony of the dogs and their decision?”
The woman said: “Yes, why not.”
I will accept their testimony and decision.
The judge ordered that the woman should be taken to the man’s house. If the dogs present in house start barking at the woman (thinking she is a stranger), then this woman is a liar.
And if the dogs, seeing the woman… considering her a member of the house… are happy and welcome her, then the woman’s claim is true and the husband and the witnesses are liars. And this woman is the mistress of the house.
As soon as this order was issued, the judge and the people present in the court started looking at the husband and the witnesses, whose faces had turned pale from the fear of being caught lying and their bodies were trembling.
Thus the decision was taken in this way that who was truthful and who was a liar.
