According to Arab media, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad issued an order yesterday for a 50% increase in soldiers’ salaries. This decision comes amidst ongoing attacks by opposition forces, which have resulted in the loss of government control over the city of Aleppo.
As reported by Syrian state news agencies, the pay raise specifically applies to active-duty soldiers currently serving in the military. The directive does not extend to retired soldiers or reservists.
Syria’s military is currently under significant pressure from opposition attacks. On Wednesday, government forces launched a counteroffensive around the Hama region, though they suffered further losses in the northern areas as a result.
Hama, located in central Syria, is strategically vital for the defense of Damascus.
