SHANGHAI: A uniquely designed lawn in Shanghai has become an unexpected social media sensation, attracting office workers looking for a peaceful escape on their lunch break.
Located at the intersection of Jununjin Road and Longqi Road, the lawn has a stepped design with shade trees. This expansive green space complements the surrounding shopping area.
The popularity of the lawn mower comes from its ergonomic design. According to Ge Liyuan, who participated in the project, there are steps in the initial design. However, with comfort in mind, the team came up with a 110-degree angle that resembles a sea chair and offers a comfortable seat.
In addition, the height and width of the steps are carefully designed for maximum comfort and resistance to water and soil erosion. The height between the steps is 50 centimeters (20 inches), and each step is approximately 105 centimeters.
“Lying on this lawn is like a beach chair, and it’s very clean,” said a resident surnamed Yi, echoing the sentiment that often comes.
At lunchtime, the lawn can see 20-30 people looking to escape the afternoon. When the weather is most pleasant in April, the lawn can be so crowded that the last newcomers struggle to find a place.
The lawn’s new glory has networks hoping to replicate it in other Chinese cities. Ge confirmed that the design was adapted for different locations.
With its unexpected popularity, the stepped lawn offers a valuable lesson in urban design, showing how a well-thought-out feature can create a wonderful place to relax in the middle of the city.
