Islamabad : British residents residing overseas can now register to vote in UK general elections, regardless of how long they have been abroad. A new law has eliminated the old 15-year time limit.
The British High Commission in Islamabad is encouraging British residents living in Pakistan to check their eligibility as part of the UK Electoral Commission’s awareness-raising drive. The Commission is an independent and neutral institution that oversees UK elections.
Those who have previously lived in or registered to vote in the UK are now eligible to vote in UK parliament elections. They can register online at www.gov.uk/registertovote and will be required to validate their personal details every three years.
The British High Commission Spokesperson stated, “A change in UK law means that more British nationals residing abroad can now vote in UK Parliament elections. It’s crucial to inform eligible voters about the changes, allowing them to register and vote accordingly. If you used to live in the UK or know anyone who did, let them know that they may be entitled to vote in the next UK general election. Registration takes only five minutes and can be completed online at gov.uk/registertovote. It is now possible to apply online to vote by mail or proxy.”
