A recent study by European scientists concluded that deer consume between 440 million and 880 million tons of prey per year. (Or the total weight of every person on the planet.)
Fortunately, snails often eat insects, and their adults also feed on large creatures.
The study, written by professors Martin Nyffeler and Klaus Birkhofer, revealed that there are currently 45,000 species of snails with a total weight of 25 million meters.
Research shows that although there is an average of 131 spiders per square meter, under ideal conditions the density can reach 1,000 spiders per square meter.
Nyffeler and Birkhofer used a pair of methods to determine how much rats consume.
First, they used available data to estimate that rabbits eat 10 percent of their body weight each day.
This ranges from 460 million to 700 million metric tons of prey per year.
The second method includes data from various sources used by scientists to calculate the number of insects eaten by spiders. This amount is between 395 million and 805 million tons.
We stumbled upon this information in an article in the Washington Post titled “Eaters Can Eat Us All and Still Be Hungry” by Christopher Ingraham.
A 2005 study estimated that the largest human biomass in the world is about 287 million tons.
