MADRID: There is no shame in taking care of yourself and your home, but many parents insist that housework is for girls. This leaves many men without the life skills they need to fend for themselves. This Spanish course changes all that.
The school introduced this lesson to the curriculum last year and broke down the barriers of gender inequality in a positive and uplifting way.
We live in a world where we are taught to traditionally believe that women should focus on the home while men go out and make money.
Fortunately, this ideology has evolved over the years and is breaking into mainstream public consciousness. Although some people still hold this idea in their lives, gender equality is more prevalent in our teachings today.
We are pleased to see that the Spanish school, Colegio MonteCastello, applies the values of gender equality to its students.
It is inspiring to see young teenagers learning to cook, sew, iron and clean at school. Education not only teaches academics but also life skills that help men and women in their daily lives.
They say it’s the parents’ job to give their children the knowledge they need to survive without them. However, not all parents do this, which is difficult to implement.
However, with Montessori education, for example, we see more and more children learning to take care of themselves from a young age.
The school includes home economics classes among other subjects. During these classes, male students will be trained in ironing, sewing, cooking and other crafts such as carpentry, carpet, plumbing and electrical skills.
It should be noted that these domestic skills are useful for both genders regardless of their status and should be set with standards in society.
