KARACHI: Former Pakistan fast bowler Sarfaraz Nawaz has criticized the selection committee and called for the dissolution of the entire committee.
Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq were recently removed from the selection panel by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
Speaking to a local news outlet, Sarfraz claimed that the entire selection committee had shown collective incompetence.
“The selection committee worked collectively, as was evident during the pre-World Cup press conference, where each member admitted that the team was established by consensus. Every member of the committee was responsible for the selection, so they should all be dismissed. The entire selection committee was unable to deliver,” said Sarfaraz.
Sarfraz also mentioned his repeated attempts to warn former PCB chiefs about Wahab Riaz’s alleged shortcomings and unsuitability for administrative roles, which he claims were ignored.
“I am on record writing letters to Zak and Naqvi regarding Wahab’s dubious past and his shortcomings as an administrator. No one considered my suggestion. I knew very well that Wahab was incapable of any function, yet they made him a selector, adviser and manager. He has failed on all fronts,” he said.
In proposing reforms, Sarfraz advocated a comprehensive overhaul rather than selective changes. He suggested reducing the selection committee to three members and stressed that simply removing individuals like Wahab and Abdul Razzaq would not be enough.
“Major surgery is necessary if we want to get the system back on track at all. There should be a three member selection committee and just throwing out Wahab and Abdul Razzak would not be enough. Even Asad Shafiq (silent spectator) and Mohammad Yousaf are unable to deliver,” he said.
Sarfraz also expressed support for keeping Shan Masood as Test captain and Mohammad Rizwan as captain for the white-ball formats, citing Rizwan’s successful record in domestic and franchise cricket.
“Rizwan has proven his captaincy credentials by helping KPK win all domestic events in the past while his performance as captain of Multan Sultans has been consistent over the years. He is the best choice for the job. Babar Azam has low confidence and should not be considered,” he concluded.
