Riyadh: Cristiano Ronaldo broke the record for most goals in the Saudi Arabian Pro League when he scored his 34th and 35th in Al Nasr’s final game of the campaign.
“I don’t follow records, records follow me,” the 39-year-old Portuguese striker later tweeted.
The former Real Madrid and Manchester United star scored in the first half in the 69th minute as Al Nassr beat Al Ittihad 4-2 at home on Monday.
The previous record for most goals in a season was 34 goals in 2018-19 by Morocco’s Abderrazak Hamdallah.
Al Nassr is guaranteed to finish second, 14 points behind champions Al Hilal.
Ronaldo joined Riyadh-based Al Nassr in December 2022 in a lucrative deal, marking the beginning of an influx of foreign players into the Saudi league.
Ronaldo, who led Portugal to victory at Euro 2016, has been named in the squad for this year’s 11th international tournament in Germany next month.
He is the top scorer in men’s international football with 206 appearances and 128 goals.
