KHYBER: People from different walks of life demanded of the authorities concerned to give up the ban on import of lamb from Afghanistan to Pakistan via Torkham border so that the tribesmen can perform the sacrificial rite on upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.
In a “Meet the Press” held in Landi Kotal press club district Khyber on Saturday tehsil chairman Haji Shah Khalid, Malik Masel Khan,Jamaat-e-Islami district leader Murad Hussain Afridi, local head of Tehreek-e-Insaf Zarbullah Shinwari,Najeeb Khawrichan and others said that lamb and sheep for sacrificial purpose imported from Afghanistan through Chaman,Kharlachi,Ghulam Khan crossing while banned at Torkham border was injustice to locals.
They added that although sheep and lamb was not a banned item but its import had been restricted at Torkham border for the last few years for unknown reasons that need to be addressed.
With permission to import of sheep, additional custom duty will be added to the national exchequer, they added and said besides the locals will get the sacrificial animal easily at a sensible rate.
They maintained that the majority of the tribesmen were jobless and couldn’t afford expensive sacrificial animals, available in down towns while sacrificial animals, imported from Afghanistan could be available at reasonable price, they argued.
They demanded of the authorities at the Torkham border to relax the ban on import of lambs from Afghanistan so that they could get sacrificial animals at low rates on the arrival of Eidul Azha.
