Indian Congress member and opposition leader of the People’s Assembly Rahul Gandhi on Monday quoted from the Quran and sent Darud Sharif to Muhammad alaihissalam during the hearing.
Speaking on the floor of the Lower House, Rahul said: “Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: ‘Allah says do not be afraid, because I am with you, I hear and I see.’
The statement was criticized by Congress leaders for spreading hatred, fear and violence against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BHJ) led by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Opposition leaders said BJP leaders are spreading hatred despite claiming to be Hindus and other religions.
Rahul said that all great personalities talk about non-violence and elimination of fear.
The comments did not go down well with India’s prime minister and his party, with Modi demanding an apology from opposition leaders and saying that calling the entire Indian community “violent” was a serious matter.
However, the opposition leader quickly responded and said: “No […] Modi, BHJ and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) do not represent the entire Indian community.”
The Congress leader’s remarks elicited a loud response from the treasury bench who shouted slogans in the assembly premises.
