Dhudial: The clerk of the post office in the town of Karyala has embezzled millions of rupees from electricity bill payments and gone into hiding. Reportedly, numerous electricity consumers from Karyala and nearby villages have allegedly been defrauded of significant amounts.
According to reports, the October 2024 electricity bills, which local residents had paid at the Karyala post office, appeared as outstanding amounts in their November 2024 bills. Concerned residents approached the Karyala post office with their complaints. Assured and guaranteed by the post office staff, they paid those bills again.
However, when the December 2024 bills also included large outstanding amounts for many consumers, they were shocked. Prominent local figures gathered outside the post office, only to discover that Imtiaz, the clerk of the Karyala Post Office and a resident of Saloi, Tehsil Choa Saidan Shah, had disappeared after misappropriating payments from the last two months’ electricity bills.
To cover up the alleged fraud, the postal department has suspended the said clerk and announced an inquiry against him. Meanwhile, a special audit team from the postal department visited the Karyala Post Office to assess the misappropriated funds, which include electricity bill payments and other account discrepancies. The estimated amount involved is said to be in the millions.
