SYDNEY: Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has confirmed he will never consider becoming England cricket coach after Matthew Mott stepped down from his post.
Mott was England’s head coach when they won the 2022 World T20 Cup in Australia, defeating Pakistan in the final. However, after the team’s below-par performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup and 2024 T20 World Cup, doubts arose over his future and he eventually stepped down.
In an interview with The ICC Review, Ponting stated that as an Australian he could not coach England.
“I’ve got other commitments too, with TV work and things that I’m doing, and I’m also trying to balance that by having a fair amount of time at home, which I haven’t had much in the last few years anyway.
“Coaching other international teams is one thing, coaching England for an Australian is probably a bit different, but I’ve got enough on my plate at the moment because there’s a bit more to come in the UK over the next few months.”
“Australia have got some white ball stuff over there that I’m going to commentate on so no, right now if my name was on the list they can actually pull it off.
The former captain then expressed his desire to return to coaching in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he previously coached Delhi Capitals (DC).
“I would love to coach in the IPL again,” he stated.
“And then I had seven seasons in Delhi which unfortunately didn’t really work out the way I would have liked and certainly the way the franchise would have liked. I think my departure there was mainly about trying to bring some silverware to the team, and that didn’t happen.”
