Islamabad: Qatar’s three-member high-level technical delegation led by Colonel Ahmed Abdullah Al-Abdullah called on the Prime Minister’s Coordinator on Climate Change Romina Khurshid to Alamy on Thursday.
In a meeting held at the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, the two parties discussed various issues of interest and cooperation in climate risk management, environmental protection, water management, energy, forestry and disaster risk management.
The Prime Minister’s Climate Assistant Romina Khurshid reminded the Qatari delegation of various clean and green initiatives undertaken by the Prime Minister to improve Pakistan’s climate resilience and protect the lives and livelihoods of vulnerable people in the country.
“The current government under Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif is more focused on working with different countries through climate diplomacy to combat the adverse effects of global warming and consequent disasters, especially heat waves, floods, soil erosion and sea level rise,” Romina Khurshid told official delegation of Qatar.
The meeting also highlighted the challenges and impacts of global warming, climate change, heat waves and floods that the country faces during the monsoon season.
Romina Khurshid Alam told the delegation that Pakistan is struggling with the severe impacts of climate change, which poses significant challenges to its environment, economy and society.
“The average Earth is experiencing an increase in average temperature, which causes frequent and severe floods and heat waves throughout the country. “These extreme heat events not only threaten public health, but also filter energy sources and cause water shortages, ” he said.
He added: “Extreme weather events such as floods and droughts are increasing in frequency. These events are disrupting agricultural productivity, causing loss of life and wildlife, and already fragile infrastructure.”
The meeting also noted that water stress, exacerbated by climate change in recent years, has become critical, stating, “Pakistan relies heavily on river systems for agriculture and domestic water supply, but climate impacts are changing the availability and quality of water, making the resources this is more difficult.
The Prime Minister’s Climate Assistant shared progress on current government initiatives to reduce climate change risks, protect the environment, water conservation, energy conservation, tree planting programs, flood and heatwave risk management.
The head of Qatar’s delegation, Colonel Ahmed Abdullah Al-Abdullah, appreciated Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s initiatives on environmental protection, climate risk management, disaster management, Green Pakistan Program, Living Indus Initiative, Ice Lake flood management and urban sustainability.
Colonel Ahmed Abdullah Al-Abdullah, in an interview with the Prime Minister’s Coordinator Romina Khurshid Alam, said that the Qatari government is aware of Pakistan’s climate vulnerability and the current government’s efforts to prevent the effects of climate change in various socio-economic sectors. country especially agriculture, water, energy, food security, health and education. “
He further stated that the Government of Qatar intends to expand and strengthen cooperation and collaboration in socio-economic sectors vulnerable to climate change, especially health, education, food security, water and energy.
Ahmed Abdullah Al-Abdullah, the head of Qatar’s delegation, also said that it will provide Pakistan with all technical and non-technical support to achieve its goals on climate change, environmental protection, national disaster risk management and flood protection.
