Islamabad: In a landmark achievement, the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC) has received accreditation from the World Federation of Medical Education (WFME). This recognition underscores PM&DC’s commitment to ensuring the highest standards of medical education in Pakistan. With the remarkable act of granting the status of recognition (WFME) for a remarkable period of 10 years.
PM&DC is accredited by WFME and all Pakistani students can apply for ECFMG and USMLE. Achieving WFME recognition will enable Pakistani medical graduates to undertake postgraduate training and practice in other countries that require WFME recognition such as the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
WFME has an official relationship with the WHO, which represents medical education and training of doctors worldwide. WFME accreditation provides an independent, transparent and rigorous method to ensure that medical school accreditation worldwide is of an internationally acceptable and high standard. WFME evaluated the compliance of accreditation agencies with defined criteria.
Accreditation by WFME means that PM&DC’s medical education programs meet international standards of quality and excellence. It reflects the council’s commitment to provide a robust and globally competitive medical education framework for emerging health professionals in Pakistan. The PM&DC team led by President Rizwan Taj undertook the WFME recognition process and achieved this historic milestone.

PM&DC President Prof.Dr. In a statement, Rizwan Taj said, “We are delighted to receive recognition from the WFME, which is a testament to our continued efforts to raise the standards of medical education in the country. Dr. Rizwan added that PM&DC requires direction and a long-term relationship with global organizations such as the World Federation of Medical Education (WFME) in pursuing its goals. Their guidance and support would go a long way towards improving the standards of medical education in our country.
Prof.Dr.Rizwan congratulated the entire nation for this momentous achievement and said, “WFME’s recognition underlines that the quality of medical education in Pakistan is up to global standards. This will give our students an opportunity to pursue their careers anywhere in the world.”
He appreciated the entire team who worked tirelessly to achieve this goal. He highlighted that the NHS&C Health Secretary Health Secretary, Surgeon General, PM&DC Council members. He also appreciated the International Cooperation and Cooperation Consultant Mr. Farzand Ali for his guidance and tireless efforts in expediting the entire recognition process in record time.
He appreciated the hard work of medical colleges and hospitals namely Shifa College of Medicine, Khyber Medical College Peshawar, University of Lahore, Agha Khan Medical College Karachi and Army Medical College Rawalpindi for their support and role in conducting workshops and inspections during the rigorous evaluation. WFME. He congratulated the entire staff of PM&DC for their tireless efforts to achieve this accreditation.
He added that this recognition is a testament to PM&DC’s firm commitment to the highest standards of medical education and accreditation. As part of this recognition, all 185 existing medical colleges in Pakistan will become WFME accredited and new medical colleges to be established in the next 10 years will automatically become WFME accredited. The recognition will further enhance the quality and standards of medical education in Pakistan by aligning it with global best practices and benchmarks.
He added that PM&DC will continue to work closely with international partners and stakeholders to ensure compliance and continuous improvement of medical education in the country.
