PARIS – French Open singles champion Jasmine Paolini suffered another defeat in Sunday’s women’s doubles final as Sara Errani’s partner lost 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 to Coco Gauff and Katerina Siniakova.
Gauff, the US Open singles champion, won his first Grand Slam doubles title. The 20-year-old American won the 2021 US Open and the 2022 French Open.
The 28-year-old Siniakova won her eighth Grand Slam doubles crown and third at Roland Garros. She shared the other seven titles with Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic.
“It was hard to accept today,” said Paolini, who was beaten straight away by world number one Iga Swiatek in Saturday’s singles final.
Gauff was paired with Siniakova in the final minute after Jessica Pegula was pulled out with an injury.
He said he didn’t expect to play doubles — let alone win.
“Honestly, I didn’t think it was going to happen,” said Gauff, who reached the last four in singles before losing to Swiatek.
“I think it was one of the few times in my life after I lost the first two finals that I thought, ‘OK, I’ve made it to this point, maybe I should just focus on singles.’
“It’s just one of those things that happens when you least expect it.”
